At one time a deck of playing cards was taxed by nearly every state in the country. Since gambling was considered a vice, states made playing cards a target similar to the way they target cigarettes with steep taxes today. Alabama is the one state in the whole country that has not yet given up on the playing card tax. Every deck of playing cards sold in Alabama is taxed 10 cents per deck, and every establishment that offers them for sale must pay a $2-per-year tax if they want to continue selling them. Kind of gives you an idea just how long that tax has been around.
