California is well-known for a lot of things, like movies, picturesque beaches, beautiful weather, and of course, taxes. Like most other states California taxes liquor, but in California they do it with gusto! For any liquor that is 50 percent or lower in alcohol content, the tax is $3.30 per gallon. That doubles to $6.60 per gallon if you want the strong stuff that is above that magical percentage point.
