5. EMP

An electromagnetic pulse can occur naturally or it can be created by man. Although harmless to humans and animals, and EMP has the potential to cause a massive societal disruption in areas of the world that are dependent on the electricity that powers the infrastructure. If you happen to be a aboriginal tribesman living off the land in the outback of Australia, you probably couldn’t care less about and EMP and may not even know it happened, but for the rest of us, it could result in the shutdown of our power grids. A naturally-occurring EMP can come to us by way of our Sun when it fires off one of it’s massive CMEs or Coronal Mass Ejections in our direction. The man-made variety is triggered by a nuclear detonation high above the surface of the target.
