10. Jumbies

From the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago comes a story this is quite complicated but too bizarre to exclude. Jumbies may sound like a fitting name for some kind of candy, but according to local folklore, these characters are not to be trifled with. Not only are they “undead,” they are also capable of shape-shifting, which serves as a warning for children to avoid playing with unfamiliar animals who may actually be jumbies. As nasty as these guys are, there are some simple ways to defeat them. One can simply leave their shoes outside at night which will confound jumbies, causing them to spend the entire night trying to figure out how to put the shoes on. A difficult task since they have no feet! Placing a container of sand or rice outside the door is also an effective way to stop them in their tracks, since they will have to count each individual grain. If a jumbie is encountered outside, crossing water is an effective escape, since jumbies will not cross water. Failing that, leaving a rope behind with many knots in it will also deter a jumbie, since it will have to stop and untie all of them. Although there is plenty of mystery surrounding jumbies, one thing is almost certain. Those things have a serious case of OCD.
