When socialist President Hugo Chavez died last year, his vice president, Nicolas Maduro installed himself as the new president and was later confirmed by a special election that he won by a slim margin of only 1.5 percent. It appears, however, that not all the people of Venezuela are happy with the direction of the country under the new president. At least 40 people have died since February when riots broke out after students began demanding change in the country by ending food shortages, reducing crime and curbing inflation. Protestors are demanding Maduro’s resignation. Maduro seems as resolute as the protestors, vowing to remain in office and not allow the opposition to “deny our right to be happy, free and independent.”
