If you ever find yourself hankering for a balloon ride in the state of Kansas, you may want to opt for one that actually takes you somewhere as opposed to the tethered variety. Since federal law prohibits local governments from taxing airports or airport users, Kansas decided that a tethered balloon ride is subject to the tax that must be paid on “any place providing amusement, entertainment or recreation services.” Sure, a ride on a “real” balloon will probably cost a lot more than one that is tethered to terra firma, but at least you won’t have the tax man reaching into your wallet while you admire the view.
