The state of Colorado has more than its share of bureaucrats who are obviously smarter than the rest of us. Although some items purchased along with that snack or beverage at your local eatery are tax-free, there are also certain items considered “non-essential” by the state, which will result in a tax being levied on them. While a cup is considered “essential” (kind of hard to take delivery of a beverage without one!), a lid for a cup is not and is therefore taxed. They will also tax you on items such as napkins. Apparently, in Colorado it’s not considered “essential” to avoid spilling your drink or cleaning up a bit when you are finished eating.
